Just as through one man (Adam) came sin and death, forgiveness and life also come through one man (Jesus, the second Adam).
-Paraphrase of Romans 5:12-19
Think about that for a minute. Have you ever known rules or even laws to change because of the wreckage of a single person? How many times are those rules or laws overturned because of the obedience of another single person? The power of destruction in one person was great - the entire world became broken and fallen because of sin. Animals turned against each other. Seasons and its weather beat down and cause death. The universe is in perpetual destruction. Worst of all, we are separated from our Creator - the source and giver of life.
God knew this from the beginning and had a Great Plan before we even sinned. In fact, the very first time sin entered the world, God was already thinking about restoring us to Himself. What love! What patience! What grace!
The mystery and glory of history is that the life-giving power of Jesus Christ is greater than sin. Almighty God, who Created and was betrayed, because of His great love for us, chose to pardon our wrong and draw near to us - to step out of His heavenly glory and walk among us. The greatest gift that could ever have been given - God giving His own Son - was given to us to restore everything that we broke.
This gift was not just for you and for me, personally. It was for the whole of Creation. When Jesus returns and His Kingdom fully realized, lions will lie down with lambs. The universe will work together in perfect harmony. And we will live eternally with our King. We will look back at that great love story with wonder and awe - how Jesus came to us, lived with us, and delivered us from ourselves. God is a great lover of His people, and He proved it in His Son, our Emmanuel.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.
